Determination of population structure and stock composition of chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) in Russia determined with microsatellites

چکیده
In Asia, there are two distinct types of chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta Walbaum). The early-maturing or “summer” chum salmon generally returns to spawn from June through August in streams bordering Kamchatka, the Sea of Okhotsk, the east coast of Sakhalin Island, and the Amur River. Later-maturing or “autumn” chum salmon generally return to spawn from September through November in streams in Japan, the southern Kuril Islands, the west coast of Sahkalin Island, and the Amur River (Sano, 1966). In general, summer chum salmon spawn in areas where egg incubation occurs in subsurface stream flow, whereas autumn chum salmon spawn in areas of groundwater upwelling (Volobuyev et al., 1990). In major river drainages, autumn chum salmon generally migrate further up the drainage to spawn than do summer chum salmon, and are larger, younger, and more fecund than the summer-run fish (Sano, 1966). Determination of the origin of salmon in mixed-stock fisheries is important for effective management. For chum salmon in Asia, scale pattern variation has provided a technique Determination of population structure and stock composition of chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) in Russia determined with microsatellites

Population structure of chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) across the Pacific Rim, determined from microsatellite analysis
Delineation of phylogenetically and adaptively distinct groups in the distribution of chum salmon around the Pacific Rim may lead to conservation of genetic diversity through an understanding of the origin and the evolutionary processes promoting and maintaining genetic differentiation. An evaluation of genetic variation in describing the population structure of salmonids, is a key component in...
متن کاملPotential Role of the Magnetic Field on Homing in Chum Salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) Tracked from the Open Sea to Coastal Japan
In order to examine the Earth’s magnetic intensity and inclination during homing migration of chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) and to present tracking data consistent with the geomagnetic imprinting hypothesis that salmon migrate homeward using the Earth’s magnetic intensity or inclination, archival tagging operations were carried out in the Bering Sea in 2012 and 2013. DST magnetic tags were at...
متن کاملTrends in Abundance and Feeding of Chum Salmon in the Western Bering Sea
Results from surveys of the western Bering Sea and adjacent Pacific epipelagic waters, performed by TINRO-Centre are reported. Surveys of the nekton community were conducted from 1986 through 2005, annually. Information on the distribution of all chum salmon by age group, the abundance and biomass of chum salmon, and other fish in the western Bering Sea and adjacent Pacific Ocean water are repo...
متن کاملRegional-Scale Declines in Productivity of Pink and Chum Salmon Stocks in Western North America
Sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) stocks throughout the southern part of their North American range have experienced declines in productivity over the past two decades. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that pink (O. gorbuscha) and chum (O. keta) salmon stocks have also experienced recent declines in productivity by investigating temporal and spatial trends in productivity of 99 wild No...
متن کاملHeteropolymorphism of mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase subunit 3 gene for the population analysis of chum salmon, Oncorhynchus keta.
Mitochondrial DNAs (mtDNAs) has been frequently used as genetic markers for the population genetic studies. In this study we used chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) from Korea, Japan andAmerica, and compared their mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase subunit 3 (ND3) genes by DNA sequence analysis. Sequence variation was studied in the ND3 among total 11 individuals from three populations. The ND3 gene...
